Former Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan on Thursday appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for questioning in connection with the promotion of online betting app 1xBet.
Dhawan reached the ED headquarters around 11 a.m. and was questioned for nearly eight hours before being released at 7 p.m. He had been served a notice by the agency to join the probe. Earlier, the ED had questioned former players Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh in the same case.
Dhawan, who announced his retirement from international cricket last year, has been one of India’s most successful openers. He made his ODI debut against Australia in 2010, followed by his T20 debut in 2011 and Test debut in 2013. In his career, he amassed 2315 runs in 34 Tests, 7436 runs in 167 ODIs, and 1759 runs in 68 T20Is.
The left-handed opener also had a long IPL career, representing multiple franchises. In 2024, he captained Punjab Kings but missed several matches due to injury.
Off the field, Dhawan’s personal life drew attention after his marriage to Ayesha Mukherjee in 2012. The couple separated in 2021, and in October 2023, a Delhi Family Court granted divorce, ruling that Ayesha had subjected Dhawan to mental cruelty.
The ED’s questioning of Dhawan adds to the widening probe into celebrities’ alleged involvement in promoting illegal betting platforms.
