Shreyas Iyer Hospitalised in Sydney After Rib Injury

India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to a hospital in Sydney and is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after suffering internal bleeding from a rib cage injury sustained during the third ODI against Australia.

Iyer injured himself while taking a spectacular backward-running catch at backward point to dismiss Alex Carey. Moments later, he reportedly fainted in the dressing room, and his vital signs were alarmingly low, prompting his immediate transfer to the hospital.

According to a BCCI statement released on Monday (October 27, 2025),

“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region... Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well.”

The board further added that the BCCI Medical Team, in coordination with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his condition. The Indian team doctor will stay back in Sydney to oversee his daily recovery.

The 31-year-old batter is expected to remain under observation for 2–7 days and may stay in Sydney for at least a week before being cleared to travel back to India.
Initially projected to miss about three weeks of action, his recovery period may now extend further.

Iyer is not part of India’s T20 squad, and his availability for the upcoming ODI fixtures will depend on his rehabilitation progress.
