Shreyas Iyer Unlikely for NZ ODIs Due to Fitness Concerns

Indian batter Shreyas Iyer’s return to Team India will be delayed, with his inclusion in the ODI squad for the upcoming series against New Zealand appearing unlikely. Iyer is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, where his medical condition is being closely evaluated this week.

According to BCCI sources, the medical team is expected to submit its assessment shortly. At present, Iyer has not attained full match fitness for ODI cricket, significantly reducing his chances of selection.

The national selection committee is scheduled to announce the squads for the three-match ODI series within the next few days. The opening match of the series will be played in Baroda on January 11.

Iyer sustained the injury during India’s tour of Australia, specifically in the third ODI in Sydney on October 25. The injury occurred while he took a spectacular running catch at backward point to dismiss Alex Carey. In the process, Iyer suffered a blow to his left rib, later diagnosed as a spleen injury.

Following the incident, Iyer left the field immediately and was rushed to a hospital in Sydney for further medical examination. Given the seriousness of spleen injuries, the BCCI medical team is exercising caution before granting him clearance for competitive cricket.
