Former India captain and current President of the Bengal Cricket Association (CAB), Sourav Ganguly, has filed a defamation case against Uttam Saha at Kolkata’s Lalbazar Police Station. Ganguly has sought ₹50 crore in damages, alleging that Saha’s statements have severely tarnished his reputation.
Ganguly said the allegations made against him are completely baseless, insulting, and defamatory. He asserted that he has no connection with the organizers of the Lionel Messi event held on December 13 and had attended the programme solely as an invited guest.
The controversy stems from chaos during Argentine football legend Lionel Messi’s visit to Lake City Stadium. Large crowds gathered for the event, which spiraled out of control as fans vandalized parts of the stadium, creating widespread disorder.
Following the incident, Uttam Saha, President of the Argentina Fan Club, accused Ganguly of acting as a “middleman” for the event’s main organizer, Satadru Dutta. These remarks reportedly infuriated Ganguly.
In his complaint, Ganguly stated that Saha’s allegations were made deliberately to damage his personal dignity and public image. He maintained that the claims have no factual basis and unfairly link him to the mismanagement of the event.
The matter is now under legal scrutiny.
