Space Education Library Opens in Kumarghat School to Inspire Tribal Students

In a bid to spark curiosity about space science among children in remote tribal areas, a Space Education Library has been inaugurated at East Ratawisa Darlong Para High School in Kumarghat block of Unakoti district.

The unique library showcases small models of rockets such as SLV Mark-II, PSLV and GSLV, along with replicas of landmark Indian missions including Chandrayaan, Mangalyaan and Aditya-L1 (Solar Mission). Recorded lectures on space science are also played to provide students with a better grasp of complex concepts.

Kumarghat Block Development Officer (BDO) Sudeep Bhowmick said the initiative aims to help children from remote areas understand India’s journey in space exploration — from carrying rockets on bicycles in the early years to preparing for human spaceflight missions.

> “Our goal is to build facilities that nurture scientific imagination and encourage children to dream big,” Bhowmick said.

The library houses over 100 books and magazines on astronomy, space technology and the lives of India’s leading scientists. Students from other schools have also started visiting to gain first-hand exposure to space science.

The project was funded through a grant under the Nanaji Deshmukh Sarvotkrishta Panchayat Sustainable Development Award, supported by the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj. Alongside the library, the school now boasts a solar-powered smart classroom with digital panels, podiums and modern seating. The entire campus runs on a 5 kW solar system, eliminating reliance on conventional electricity.

Teachers report a surge in enrollment following these developments. Ringampar Halam, a teacher at the school, said student strength has risen from 67 in 2024-25 to 201 in 2025-26, including 57 transfers from private English-medium schools.

The school, managed by the Ratawisa Village Committee representing over 800 tribal families — mainly Tripuri, Garo, Reang, Halam and Darlong communities — has also earned credibility with its 100% success rate in last year’s Class 10 board exams.

Village committee in-charge Mrinal Majumdar said the holistic approach has transformed the school into a model of affordable, quality education, drawing students away from costly private institutions.

With these efforts, the Kumarghat Block Advisory Committee hopes to nurture a new generation of scientifically minded tribal youth and provide them with a brighter future through knowledge and innovation.
