Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen Dies; State Funeral on Saturday

Tripura Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen passed away in Bengaluru on Friday, December 26, 2025. He was 72 and had been undergoing prolonged medical treatment following a massive cardiac arrest suffered in Agartala earlier this year. In keeping with the wishes of his family, the State government had facilitated his transfer to Bengaluru for advanced treatment.

A seasoned politician, Sen began his political career with the Indian National Congress before joining the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the 2018 Assembly elections. He was a four-time Member of the Legislative Assembly, representing the Dharmanagar constituency in North Tripura—twice on a Congress ticket in 2008 and 2013, and later twice as a BJP nominee in 2018 and 2023.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in paying tributes to the departed leader. In a message posted on social media, the Prime Minister said that Sen would be remembered for his contributions to Tripura’s development and his unwavering commitment to social causes. Several Union Ministers, Chief Ministers, and leaders from across the political spectrum also expressed their condolences.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha described Sen’s demise as an irreparable loss to the people of the State, while Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu conveyed his heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family. In view of his passing, the State government declared a three-day period of mourning, during which all government offices and educational institutions remained closed on Friday.

The Tripura government has announced that Biswa Bandhu Sen will be accorded a state funeral. His last rites will be performed on Saturday, December 27, in his hometown of Dharmanagar.

As Speaker of the Assembly, Sen was widely respected for conducting proceedings with fairness, dignity, and exemplary administrative competence. Chief Minister Saha noted that Sen discharged his constitutional responsibilities with efficiency and impartiality.

Sen’s health complications began on August 8, when he suffered a brain haemorrhage at the Agartala railway station while boarding a train to Dharmanagar. He was initially admitted to Tripura Medical College and later shifted to a private hospital in Agartala, where he underwent emergency surgery. On August 11, he was moved to a Bengaluru-based hospital for specialised treatment.

At the initiative of the Tripura Chief Minister, a team of doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, visited Agartala to assess Sen’s condition and review his treatment protocols. His son, Dr. Arijit Sen, had earlier stated that the family decided to shift him to Bengaluru for further advanced care and expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister and the medical teams involved for their timely intervention.

With Sen’s passing, Tripura has lost a seasoned parliamentarian and a committed public servant whose contributions to the State’s political and social life will be remembered with deep respect.
