Sri Lanka Start T20 World Cup with 20-Run Win

Sri Lanka opened their T20 World Cup campaign on a positive note with a convincing 20-run victory over Ireland in the third match of the tournament at the R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, on Sunday.
After winning the toss, Ireland elected to bowl first. Sri Lanka posted a competitive total of 163 for 6 in their allotted 20 overs. Kusal Mendis anchored the innings with a composed 56 off 43 balls, while Kamindu Mendis provided the late flourish, scoring a brisk 44 off just 19 deliveries. For Ireland, Barry McCarthy and George Dockrell were the standout bowlers, picking up two wickets each.
In reply, Ireland struggled to keep pace with the required run rate and were eventually bowled out for 143 in 19.5 overs. Sri Lanka’s spin attack proved decisive, with Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga claiming three wickets apiece. Matheesha Pathirana also made an impact, taking two crucial wickets.
Harry Tector top-scored for Ireland with 40 runs, while Ross Adair contributed 34. However, the rest of the batting line-up failed to build partnerships, allowing Sri Lanka to maintain control throughout the chase.
The win gives Sri Lanka a confident start to their T20 World Cup journey, highlighting both their batting depth and bowling strength.
