Leader of the Opposition, Jitendra Chaudhury (CPI-M), has formally written to Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, expressing grave concerns about:
A surge in political violence against opposition members in Tripura.
Alleged police inaction and complicity, which he claims is encouraging further attacks.
A decline in law and order, with targeted attacks becoming an "almost daily occurrence."
Chaudhury acknowledged some improvement in law and order since 2018 but insists the current wave of violence marks a significant deterioration. He accused BJP-affiliated individuals of perpetrating these attacks and called for:
Immediate intervention from the CM (who also heads the Home Department),
Restoration of democratic rights and pluralism, and
Neutral and effective policing.
Political Context & Implications:
The CPI(M)-led Left Front was in power for 25 years until the BJP-IPFT alliance took over in 2018.
Tripura has seen intense political rivalry, especially between CPI(M) and BJP.
The letter highlights not just law-and-order concerns, but also broader fears about the erosion of democratic space for opposition parties.
Implications for Governance & Democracy:
The allegations, if substantiated, raise serious concerns about political freedom and police neutrality.
The CM's response—or lack thereof— could influence public perception about the government's commitment to democratic norms.
This situation may also attract national political scrutiny, particularly from civil society, the Election Commission, and human rights groups.
