Senior Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman on Monday declared that the Congress will contest the 2028 Tripura Assembly elections independently, without forming any alliance with other parties.

Speaking at a public programme in Churaibari, North Tripura, Roy Barman called upon the people to ensure Congress’s victory in the next polls, asserting that the party is ready to take on the BJP alone.
“Many will advise you not to join the Congress, but the reality is that the party will not forge any alliance in the next elections.

The Congress will fight the fascist BJP alone,” said the former minister.
In the 2023 Assembly elections, the Congress had contested jointly with the CPI(M)-led Left Front, but the alliance failed to make significant gains against the BJP.
Roy Barman further claimed that the people of Tripura want to see him and Congress leader Ashish Kumar Saha leading the state. “The Congress is the only party that can counter the BJP’s rise,” he said.
Taking a swipe at the Election Commission (EC), the MLA alleged that it was functioning in a “partisan” manner. “Our leader Rahul Gandhi has shown with evidence that the EC is making losers the winners and winners the losers. Its role is very disturbing,” Roy Barman alleged.
The event also witnessed a major political defection, as over 450 voters from the BJP and CPI(M) joined the Congress at the Churaibari Community Hall under Kadamtala–Kurti Assembly constituency.
