Following the demise of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, the post has fallen vacant, triggering rapid political developments within the ruling alliance. According to highly placed sources, Ajit Pawar’s wife, Sunetra Pawar, is expected to be sworn in as the new Deputy Chief Minister on Saturday.
If confirmed, Sunetra Pawar will create history by becoming the first woman Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
On Friday, senior leaders of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and formally proposed Sunetra Pawar’s name for the post. The delegation included Chhagan Bhujbal, Sunil Tatkare, Dhananjay Munde, and Praful Patel.
Sources indicate that a crucial meeting of all NCP MLAs will be held in Mumbai on Saturday at 11 a.m., during which Sunetra Pawar is expected to be elected as the Leader of the NCP Legislature Party. Following this, she is likely to take the oath of office as Deputy Chief Minister later in the evening.
Later on Friday, the same group of senior NCP leaders met Chief Minister Fadnavis again at his official residence, Varsha, where Sunetra Pawar’s name was reportedly finalized.
Parallel consultations were also underway in Baramati, where Sunetra Pawar held discussions with the Pawar family’s political advisor Naresh Arora, in the presence of Parth Pawar and Jai Pawar. After the meeting, Arora left for Mumbai to communicate the family’s decision to senior party leaders.
A separate delegation of NCP leaders also traveled from Mumbai to Baramati to meet Sunetra Pawar. She is expected to arrive in Mumbai either late tonight or early Saturday morning.
Since Ajit Pawar’s death earlier this week, party supporters and grassroots leaders have been demanding that Sunetra Pawar be entrusted with his political legacy. There is also growing pressure within the NCP for her to be allotted the same ministerial portfolios previously held by Ajit Pawar.
An official announcement is expected on Saturday.
