Which state's 10th and 12th board exams are the toughest? This question must have come to your mind at some point. The answer to this has been given by NCERT's unit PARAKH.
According to PARAKH's report, the 10th and 12th papers of Tripura, Maharashtra, Goa, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal boards are tougher than others. PARAKH has arrived at this conclusion by analysing the English and Mathematics subject papers of 17 school education boards.
According to Parakh, easy questions are those which are expected to be answered correctly by most of the students who are aware of relevant learning opportunities. Whereas difficult questions are those which are answered by only a small number of students.
The report states that only difficult and medium level (55.34%) questions were asked in the 10th and 12th exams of Goa Board. Parakh found in its analysis that the 10th and 12th class students of Tripura, Maharashtra, Goa, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal boards have to face tougher questions than other state boards.
According to the report, the Tripura Board of Secondary Education had the highest proportion of difficult questions (66.6%), followed by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (53.57%), Goa Board (44.66%), Chhattisgarh Board of Secondary Education (44.44%) and West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (33.33%). The 17 board exams analysed by Parakh include Punjab, Haryana, UP, Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Manipur, Odisha, Nagaland, Himachal and Kerala.
Apart from this, CISCE was also analysed, which conducts ICSE and ISC exams. Parakh found that most of the questions were of easy to medium difficulty level. It has been said that there may be many reasons for this, but it does not help students achieve high levels.
Therefore, boards should be advised to prepare papers that help students to be creative and imaginative. The report said that apart from Chhattisgarh, the Odisha Board of Secondary Education had the highest percentage of easy questions (40%).
The analysis also looked at the 'cognitive demand' of the question papers of 17 school boards. It was found that the Haryana Board's question papers had the highest number of questions (64.71%) that test the ability to memorise. It was followed by Goa (57.89%), Himachal Pradesh School Education Board (53.13%) and Odisha (50.77%). On the other hand, the UP Board (87.76%) had the highest number of questions that test the understanding of the students. It was followed by Nagaland Board of Secondary Education (73%), Tripura Board of Secondary Education (61.7%) and Kerala Public Examination Board (61.54%)
