Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Friday laid out a roadmap for the state’s education and employee welfare sectors, asserting that his government has recruited over 5,000 teachers in the past seven years and is committed to bridging the gap between state and central employees in Dearness Allowance (DA).
Addressing the state-level Teachers’ Day programme, Saha said a total of 19,800 employees of various categories have been appointed over the last seven years, of which 5,215 are teachers. “The government wants to recruit quality teachers for imparting quality education in government schools,” he stressed, hinting at merit-based recruitment to improve the standard of public education.

DA Gap Reduction: A Political and Financial Balancing Act
The Chief Minister, who also holds the Education portfolio, highlighted his administration’s efforts to reduce the DA disparity. Currently, state government employees get 33% DA compared to the 55% received by central staff.
“In my "29 months as CM, I released 29% DA to employees. We are committed to narrowing the gap. There is no need to stage agitations for DA arrears,” Saha said, making a veiled appeal to government staff unions, which have historically staged protests over pay parity.
Political observers see this as both a welfare gesture and a strategic reassurance ahead of upcoming civic polls, where employee satisfaction could influence electoral outcomes.

Tripura’s Educational Hub Vision
Projecting education as the backbone of his governance, Saha said Tripura is working towards becoming a regional educational hub. He announced that the existing Women’s College would be elevated into the state’s first full-fledged university exclusively for women.
“You will hear positive news soon. Besides, three new general degree colleges will come up in Ambassa, Karbook and Kakraban,” he revealed.
Educationists believe this move is designed not only to boost higher education opportunities for women but also to curb the outflow of students to other states, which has been a persistent concern for Tripura families.
The Bigger Picture
The announcements come at a time when the state is facing pressure on two fronts: improving its employment record and providing quality education to a growing student population. By focusing on teacher recruitment and infrastructure expansion, the BJP-led government aims to deliver on promises of job creation and educational transformation.
Analysts suggest that Saha’s emphasis on “quality teachers” reflects an acknowledgment of past criticisms of irregular recruitment practices. Meanwhile, the move to create a women’s university could become a symbolic landmark in Tripura’s push for gender empowerment in higher education.
