Tension Erupted As Idol Of Goddess Kali Found Vandalised in West Tripura

Police said on Monday that heavy security force has been deployed in the area to defuse tension.

"Miscreants set fire to around 12 houses in Ranirbazar after the idol of Goddess Kali was found vandalised in Kaiturbari late Sunday night.

Some motorcycles and a pick-up van were also gutted in the fire. No casualties were reported in the incident,"

Assistant Inspector General (Law and Order) Ananta Das told news agency PTI.

According to the eyewitnesses, people fled from their homes after seeing the violent mob. Ananta Das said that a large number of security forces have been deployed to reduce tension.

Also, Director General of Police (Intelligence) Anurag Dhankar and West Tripura Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar have visited the area.

He said that after the assessment of the damage to the property is completed, the police will take cognizance and register a case.

At present, the situation is under control. At the same time, Tipra Motha Party supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma expressed concern over the incident and appealed to everyone to maintain law and order.

Debbarma wrote on social media, "The incident that took place last night in Ranibazar Kaiturbari area is a worrying sign with reports of communal clashes. I appeal to those who are responsible for maintaining law and order to follow the rule of law."

He said that when our state is facing a natural disaster and there is so much tension, some elements are only playing religious politics. The miscreants should be dealt with strictly regardless of their faith. The law should be neutral towards all. I urge Tripura to be united in these difficult times and not fight each other."

Let us tell you that till now 26 people have died and 1.17 lakh people have become homeless due to the devastating floods in Tripura since August 19
