"Everyone should be more vigilant to prevent road accidents. Compared to the national average, fewer people die in road accidents in the state of Tripura. The Traffic and Transport Department should keep a strict vigil on the valid driving licenses of vehicle drivers. Keeping safety in mind, it should be mandatory for bike or two-wheeler drivers and riders to wear double helmets."
Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha said this while inaugurating the virtual VLT (Vehicle Location Tracking) and MT (Monitoring System) at Swami Vivekananda Maidan in Agartala organized by the Transport Department, at
This program is being done as part of the road safety program.
Chief Minister Dr. Saha said that the Transport Department is not limiting its work to just renewing vehicle registration and licensing documents. With the dedicated efforts of the Transport Minister, this department is doing various innovative activities for road safety. Earlier also, the Transport Department has provided Interceptor Vehicles. Today, 16 Basic Life Support Ambulances have been provided. Out of these, 8 will be operated under the supervision of the Fire Service Department and 8 different police stations under the supervision of the police. Especially, these ambulances will be deployed in accident-prone areas of the national highway. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also given special importance to reducing road accidents in the country. The state government is also working to prevent accidents under the direction of the Prime Minister.
The Chief Minister said that after any accident, the fire brigade personnel play an important role. In most cases, they have the main responsibility of reaching the injured patients to the hospital. In this case, the addition of Basic Life Support Ambulance will speed up this work and the injured people will get the opportunity to receive first aid in this ambulance. Therefore, this initiative of the Transport Department is very commendable. Some people lose their lives in accidents, while others are permanently paralyzed. Loss of life in accidents is not only a great loss for the family of that person, but it is also a great loss for the country and the state. Because human resources are invaluable to us. Statistics show that the number of deaths and injuries in accidents in the state is much lower than the national average. This needs to be reduced further. Efforts should be made so that accidents do not occur due to carelessness. The central and state governments are working together to prevent road accidents.
Chief Minister and Home Minister Professor Dr. Manik Saha also emphasized the importance of wearing helmets for two-wheeler drivers and riders. He said that helmets should be worn not only to protect themselves from the police, but also to protect their own lives. Only by wearing a helmet can head injuries be avoided.
Dr. Saha said that from now on, it has become mandatory to install speed control devices in commercial vehicles. In this case, excessive speeding while carrying passengers will come under the ambit of the law. The state government has made the Tripura Vehicle Scrapping Policy 2024. Under this, government vehicles that are 15 years old will no longer be allowed to be used. Under the Rahbir project, if a person takes an injured person to the hospital quickly, he will be given Rs. 25,000 and a certificate. Under the hit and run scheme, the family of a person killed in a road accident will be given Rs. 2 lakh and the seriously injured person will be given Rs. 50,000. In addition, if a person injured in an accident is treated in an approved hospital, Rs. 1.5 lakh will be given.
The Chief Minister also said at the event that proper vigilance should be maintained regarding over-speeding of cars or bikes. It should also be checked whether the drivers of the vehicles have a valid driving license. Electronic signals must be obeyed. Vehicles cannot be driven while intoxicated. However, the fitness of the vehicles must be taken care of. VLT (Vehicle Location Tracking) has been made mandatory in all types of public transport under the Nirbhaya Fund Scheme. Which has been launched in the state.
