Junior doctors again took out a protest march regarding the rape-murder case of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar College and Hospital. This protest march was taken out from College Square to Dharmatala in Kolkata.
Junior doctors have stopped work to put pressure on the state government. The doctors demand that they should be given complete security.
Earlier, junior doctors had been protesting for 42 days from August 10. They returned to duty in government hospitals on September 21.
During the hearing on September 30, the Supreme Court had pulled up the Mamata government for the negligence in the security of hospitals. It also ordered that CCTVs be installed in all hospitals within 15 days.
On August 9, trainee doctors were on strike in protest against the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College Hospital.
Aniket Mahato, one of the protesting junior doctors, while announcing the strike said- Mamata government's attitude towards meeting our security demands does not seem positive. Today is the 52nd day. We are still being attacked. No effort is being made to fulfill CM Mamata's promises. We have no option left except to completely stop work from today. Till the time we do not see action from the state government, the work will remain closed.
Actually, a case of beating by 3 doctors and 3 nurses came to light after the death of a patient on 27 September in Kolkata's Sagar Dutta Hospital. Junior doctors are angry with this incident. Doctors also protested in the hospital. 4 protesting doctors have been detained in this case. Doctors demand that they should be provided security in hospitals so that they can do their duty without fear.
In the hearing in the Supreme Court on September 30, the Bengal government said that resident doctors are not working in the in-patient department and out-patient department. In response to this, the doctors' lawyer said that doctors are working in all emergency and essential services. The next hearing of the case will be on October 14. On this day, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta will have to present a report on the investigation of the National Task Force.
There was a 7-day standoff in Kolkata over the meeting between the doctors and Mamata. After 4 failed attempts, a meeting was held between Mamata and the doctors' delegation at the CM House on 16 September. In this meeting, Mamata accepted 3 out of 5 demands of the doctors and asked them to return to work.
On the demand of doctors, the Bengal government removed Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal from his post. Manoj Verma took his place. 4 more officers of the health department have also been transferred. Apart from this, the posts of 5 more police officers were also changed.
On September 19, the doctors had decided to end the strike. The junior doctors said that on our demand, the Kolkata Police Commissioner, Director of Medical Education and Director of Health Services have been removed. However, this does not mean that the movement is over. Our demand to remove Health Secretary NS Nigam and end the threat culture in hospitals still continues
