Tripura’s Courts Struggle With 65k Pending Cases: Govt In Assembly

As many as 65,013 cases are pending in Tripura’s High Court and subordinate courts, according to a Law Department report tabled in the Assembly. Chief Minister Manik Saha, who also holds the law portfolio, said 50,887 of these are criminal cases and 14,126 civil cases.

Of the criminal cases, 50,707 are stuck in the subordinate judiciary and 180 in the High Court. Among civil cases, 13,204 are pending in lower courts and 922 in the High Court.

Pending cases include 460 rape trials, 403 murder cases, and 105 violence-related matters.

On conviction rates, Saha said the state recorded 30.57% in 2022-23, 22.30% in 2023-24, and 28.42% in 2024-25.

Despite the pendency, Saha cited NCRB data showing a 19.3% decline in Tripura’s overall crime rate in 2024, making it the third-lowest among 28 states. He highlighted sharp falls in crimes against women (55%), property crimes (45%), assaults (38%), communal violence (75%), and other violent acts (37%).

The CM also pointed to recent initiatives such as 33% reservation for women in all government jobs, including the Tripura State Rifles, and a 24×7 women’s safety helpline (1091) operational at all police stations.
