In the last seven years, 73.15 metric tonnes of pineapples have been exported from the state to Dubai, Oman and Qatar. Besides, the state government is taking initiatives for Sidal dried fish, Sabri banana and several other local products to get GI tag.
This information was given by Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath at the Pineapple Festival held at Gitanjali Auditorium in Kumarghat, Uttar district on Friday. He also added that in order to increase the income of betel farmers, the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department has taken a plan to set up a new fruit processing center in Nalkata on PPP model (Public-Private Partnership).
The Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare claimed that after our government came to power, pineapple has been declared as the state fruit of Tripura by the President.
He said that the state mainly produces two varieties of pineapple, Q and Queen. Which are incomparable in taste and aroma. The purpose of this festival is to promote and popularize pineapple.
Queen pineapple has already received the GI tag, so no one else can imitate it. We are emphasizing on the production and market expansion of this pineapple.
He said that a total of 3.65 lakh acres of fruit are cultivated in the state, out of which pineapple is cultivated in 74,000 acres. In Dhalai, Unkoti and Uttar districts, 53,700 acres of Q variety pineapple and 22,000 acres of Queen variety pineapple are produced.
He further said that a buyer-seller meet was held in Agartala on July 9 on the state's organic crops. Through this meet, the state government wants buyers from outside the state to buy the crops produced by farmers here. This will further increase the income of farmers.
In his words, when our government came to power in 2018, the price of pineapple was 8 to 9 rupees per kg. Now it has increased to an average of 40 rupees or more. Our main goal is to increase the income of farmers. The Union Ministry of Donors is working to popularize Queen Pineapple in the global market. We have met Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia twice and plans are underway to take up a project worth Rs 132 crore.
On this day, the minister further said that from 2018 to 2025, in addition to exporting 73.15 metric tons of pineapple, 4.40 metric tons of jackfruit have been exported to America, 30 metric tons of ginger and 17 metric tons of betel nut to Bangladesh.
