Tripura Assembly Mourns Demise of Speaker Biswabandhu Sen

The Tripura Assembly on Friday expressed profound sorrow over the demise of the Speaker of the 13th Tripura Legislative Assembly, Biswabandhu Sen, stating that his passing marks a grave loss for the legislative institution and the people of the state. In its condolence message, the Assembly described him as a wise custodian of parliamentary traditions, an accomplished legislator, and a dedicated public servant. He was 72 at the time of his death.

In the message, the acting Speaker recalled that on August 8, 2025, Sen suddenly fell critically ill at Agartala Railway Station while returning to his residence in Dharmanagar after completing the day’s official duties at the Assembly. He was immediately rushed to a hospital, where specialist doctors diagnosed complications arising from cerebral bleeding and initiated emergency medical care.

Later, in accordance with the wishes of his family, he was airlifted to a private hospital in Bengaluru for advanced treatment. Despite intensive care under the supervision of expert doctors, Sen breathed his last in the early hours of December 26, 2025.

Born on September 23, 1953, in Dharmanagar, Sen completed his schooling in his hometown. From his student days, he was recognised as a talented, sensitive and culturally inclined individual. He demonstrated leadership qualities and social commitment by actively participating in the nationalist student movement. After graduating from Maharaja Bir Bikram College in Agartala, he dedicated himself to nationalist politics and public service.

Since the 1970s, Sen had been associated with the Indian National Congress, devoting himself to public service alongside party responsibilities. Throughout his political career, he persistently advocated for the rights of the poor, marginalised and disadvantaged sections of society, while also championing the cause of unemployed youth. He spearheaded several movements demanding administrative benefits and constitutional rights for people in the undivided northern districts, including Dharmanagar.

He was elected to the Tripura Legislative Assembly from the 56-Dharmanagar constituency as a Congress candidate in 2008 and again in 2013. In 2017, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, and subsequently secured decisive victories from the same constituency in the 2018 and 2023 Assembly elections, reaffirming the trust and confidence of the electorate.

Following the formation of the BJP-led government in Tripura in 2018, Sen served as Deputy Speaker from June 21, 2018, until the completion of the term of the 12th Legislative Assembly. During this period, his prudence, patience and adept conduct of Assembly proceedings earned widespread appreciation across party lines.

After the constitution of the 13th Legislative Assembly, he was elected Speaker, where he set a distinguished example in upholding parliamentary decorum, safeguarding institutional impartiality, and ensuring equitable opportunities for members to participate in legislative deliberations.

Beyond his political commitments, Sen nurtured a deep passion for culture and the arts. A devoted admirer of Rabindra Sangeet, he also maintained a keen interest in theatre and traditional Jatra performances. On several occasions, he personally participated in stage productions and actively encouraged the promotion of theatre and Jatra culture in the state. He also had a fondness for writing rhymes and poetry.

Respected across political and social circles for his humility, tolerance and dignified conduct, Sen’s passing has created a profound void in public life. The Assembly noted that with his demise, Tripura has lost a sagacious guide, an impartial guardian of democratic institutions, and a compassionate leader.

In this moment of grief, the Tripura Legislative Assembly prayed for the eternal peace of his departed soul and conveyed its heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family and relatives.
