Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Thursday visited Shantirbazar Market in Dhalai district to assess the damage caused by the violence that erupted during the state-wide bandh called by the Tripura Civil Society on October 23. The visit marked the government’s first on-ground assessment since the unrest, which left several shops and houses damaged and disrupted local commerce.

During his interaction with traders and residents, Dr. Saha urged the public to uphold peace and harmony, stressing that “violence brings only loss and division.” He assured affected families that the state government would extend all possible support for rehabilitation.
The Chief Minister announced a relief package aimed at compensating property losses:
-
₹3 lakh for fully damaged houses or shops
-
₹1.5 lakh for severely damaged properties
-
₹15,000 for partially damaged structures
Additionally, financial and medical assistance will be provided to individuals injured during the incident. District authorities have been directed to ensure prompt verification and disbursal of relief fund.

While the relief announcement has been largely welcomed, questions remain over the adequacy and timely delivery of assistance. The ₹3 lakh compensation for fully damaged properties may offer some relief, but many traders argue that rebuilding costs — especially in market areas — could be significantly higher.
Experts note that effective implementation and transparent beneficiary identification will be critical in preventing delays or grievances. Past experiences from similar incidents in Tripura suggest that bureaucratic hurdles often slow rehabilitation, leaving affected families in prolonged financial distress.

Furthermore, the visit comes at a politically sensitive time, with growing civil society movements and public discontent over administrative accountability. Dr. Saha’s outreach, therefore, serves both humanitarian and political purposes — projecting a responsive government image while emphasizing peace and tranquility.
The bandh-related violence dealt a heavy blow to small traders in Shantirbazar, many of whom rely on daily earnings. Local business associations estimate losses running into several crores due to property damage and disruption of trade.
Residents expressed cautious optimism following the Chief Minister’s visit, with many hoping that government intervention would accelerate recovery. However, there is visible concern about the potential recurrence of political or civil unrest in the region, which could further destabilize livelihoods.
The Chief Minister’s visit has momentarily calmed tensions and sent a message of state solidarity. However, the long-term success of the rehabilitation drive will depend on the speed of compensation delivery, restoration of business activity, and sustained peace-building efforts.
As Tripura continues to navigate socio-political volatility, the government’s handling of the Shantirbazar incident may become a key test of its administrative efficiency and crisis management capacity.
