Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha on Sunday criticized opposition parties for spreading what he termed “misleading statements” regarding the recent unrest in Unakoti district, asserting that such comments were intended to confuse the public. He reiterated that the police have been given full authority to maintain law and order and are acting diligently.
The Chief Minister’s remarks came in the aftermath of communal tension that broke out on Saturday in the Saydarpara–Shimultala area under Fatikroy police station in the Kumarghat subdivision. The violence reportedly erupted following a dispute over the collection of puja subscriptions, which escalated into vandalism and arson.

Opposition leaders alleged that the state government and Tripura Police failed to respond effectively to the situation. Responding to these allegations, Dr. Saha said he immediately contacted Unakoti district’s minister Tinku Roy, along with senior district officials, to ensure swift action.
“I spoke with the Superintendent of Police and the District Magistrate and instructed them to take strict measures against those involved. Arrests have already been made,” the Chief Minister said, emphasizing that law enforcement agencies are actively addressing the situation.
He also reminded the opposition of incidents of violence during the CPI(M) regime, citing past clashes in Mandwi and Khowai that resulted in deaths, including journalists and a minister.

“Unnecessary political statements should be avoided. The police are doing their job, and those responsible have been arrested,” he added.
Meanwhile, police said ten people have been arrested in connection with the violence. Superintendent of Police Avinash Kumar Rai confirmed that no fresh incidents have been reported and that paramilitary forces are conducting foot patrols in sensitive areas.
“Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita remain in force, and internet services continue to be suspended. The situation will be reviewed before easing restrictions,” Rai said. He added that four police personnel and six civilians were injured during the clashes.
Congress Legislature Party leader Birajit Sinha alleged that he was prevented by police from visiting the affected area, citing security concerns. Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury criticized the BJP-led government, accusing it of failing to protect the minority community and claiming that the Chief Minister did not immediately address the violence.
State BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee condemned the violence and praised the police for taking prompt action against those responsible.
The state government has reiterated its commitment to restoring peace and maintaining communal harmony across Tripura.
