Tripura CM Stresses Media’s Role in Preserving Harmony on National Press Day

Maintaining political, social and cultural harmony is one of the most important responsibilities of journalists, as they serve as the mirror of society—Tripura Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha said while addressing a program organized on the occasion of National Press Day at the Sukanta Academy Auditorium in Agartala today.

Organized by the Information & Culture Department, the event highlighted the growing challenges faced by modern journalism, especially the alarming rise of fake news.

“Fake news is now so widespread that people won’t trust it anymore”

Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister said:

“Fake news is becoming so prevalent on social media, web media and other platforms that people will eventually stop believing anything. Journalists watch everything closely. Journalism is not just a profession—it is a major responsibility.”

Dr. Saha emphasized that correct news collection and presentation require dedication, rigorous training, and continuous effort.

Govt taking journalist murder cases seriously

Referring to the killings of two journalists in Tripura, Dr. Saha said he has personally taken up the matter since assuming office.
He stressed the importance of organizing regular seminars and workshops:

“Such discussions should be held at least once a month. The Information and Culture Department will provide all necessary support.”

Use of technology to verify news

The Chief Minister also said he conducts virtual meetings with all District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police to verify facts published in newspapers.
If any report is found incorrect, he instructs authorities to issue formal rejoinders.

He added that the media plays a major role in ensuring that governance remains transparent and accountable.

Warning against yellow journalism

Calling yellow journalism a “matter of great concern,” Dr. Saha urged journalists to remain vigilant and uphold ethical standards.

He also noted challenges such as half-truth propaganda, divisive election campaigns, and online hate speech, urging journalists to maintain balance between media freedom and responsibility.

Media-friendly initiatives

Dr. Saha highlighted recent initiatives, including the formation of a Media Advisory Committee consisting of senior journalists.
Sub-committees on advertising, accreditation, and journalist welfare have also been established.

Dignitaries and Felicitation

Former Tripura High Court Justice Arindam Lodh, Information & Culture Secretary P.K. Chakraborty, Director Bimbisar Bhattacharya, Agartala Press Club President Pranab Sarkar, senior journalists Manas Pal, Shanit Debray and others graced the event.

Two senior journalists—Pranamoy Saha (Amarpur) and Anupam Bhattacharya (Kailashahar)—were felicitated with shawls, mementos, and financial awards.
