Tripura: CPI(M) Leaders Assaulted, Oppn Slams Govt

Leader of the Opposition in Tripura, Jitendra Chaudhury, has urged the state administration to take immediate and strict action against those allegedly involved in the assault on CPI(M) leaders during an all-party meeting on the Special Identification Register (SIR) in South District.

In a letter to Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha on Wednesday, Chaudhury—who is also CPI(M) state secretary—described the incident inside the office of the Santirbazar Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) on September 16 as “despicable” and “audacious.”

He alleged that CPI(M) leaders Balaram Reang, Ashish Paul, and Prasun Reang were physically attacked by “known BJP miscreants” during the meeting. The injured leaders were admitted to Santirbazar District Hospital, where Chaudhury claimed the same group of attackers again attempted to assault them, even in the presence of the SDM and police officials.

According to Chaudhury, he had to personally intervene with the South District Magistrate to ensure the safety of the injured leaders, who were later referred to GBP Hospital in Agartala to avoid further incidents.

“What kind of democratic system do we belong to, where opposition leaders are attacked inside a government office and even in a hospital, without any action against the perpetrators?” Chaudhury wrote in his letter. He further alleged that neither the SDM nor the SDPO filed an FIR or made arrests despite the attackers being known.

The CPI(M) has accused the ruling BJP of “intimidation politics” ahead of the SIR drive, while the Opposition demanded impartial intervention from the state administration. Chaudhury said timely action was necessary to restore public confidence in governance and law enforcement.

The state government has yet to issue an official response to the allegations.
