Tripura Emerges as Global Hub for Potato Research: CIP Eyes Strategic Partnership

Tripura, a state once on the margins of India’s potato belt, is now attracting global attention. A high-powered delegation from the International Potato Centre (CIP), Lima, Peru has arrived in Agartala to explore long-term collaborations that could transform the region into a centre of potato research and innovation.

The CIP team, impressed by the state’s progressive strides in potato cultivation, described Tripura as “one of the most promising states” for India’s potato industry. The delegation praised the relentless efforts of local officials and researchers, crediting them for making potato a successful crop in the state’s unique agro-climatic conditions.

“We are more than satisfied and very impressed with the dedication of officials and researchers in making potato a successful crop in Tripura,” the team said in a statement.

Game-Changing Innovations

The visiting scientists highlighted the adoption of epical rooted cuttings with seed links—a breakthrough technology that has helped local farmers achieve higher yields while reducing costs. They also underscored the scope for introducing new high-value potato varieties, capable of fetching premium prices in domestic and international markets.

According to sources, CIP is keen to partner not only with Tripura’s horticulture department but also with progressive farmer groups and local research bodies, ensuring that global best practices are adapted to grassroots realities.

Political Push and Global Backing

The delegation holds talks with the state’s Agriculture and Horticulture Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Friday. Insiders suggest that the government is eager to formalise research collaborations with CIP scientists—an initiative that could put Tripura on the global potato map.

The move gains further weight as CIP Director General Simon Heck, who also serves as Senior Director of CGIAR since March 2023, is leading global efforts to scale up potato research. His backing signals that Tripura’s potato experiment could receive international scientific and financial support.

“We want to ensure that potato production in Tripura continues to evolve, become more efficient, and deliver greater benefits to farmers. We pledge to continue our support from the international scientific community,” the delegation affirmed.

Diplomatic Signals

The development comes close on the heels of Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha’s meeting with Kathy Giles Diaz, U.S. Consul General, Kolkata, at the State Secretariat on Thursday. While details of the discussion remain under wraps, officials hinted that agriculture, trade and investment opportunities were among the key talking points.

Saha later posted on X: “Had an insightful meeting with Ms. Kathy Giles Diaz, U.S. Consul General, Kolkata today at the Secretariat, Agartala.”

Why This Matters

If the collaboration materialises, Tripura could emerge as a model state for high-tech potato cultivation, opening new doors for exports, farmer incomes, and rural employment. For a state striving to expand its horticultural base, this partnership could be a game-changer in food security and agribusiness.
