Tripura Flood Claims 24 People Till Friday: Govt

The flood situation in Tripura is gradually improving as the weather conditions improved and relatively less rainfall occurred in the last 24 hours. 

At present 558 relief camps have been opened across the state. About 1 lakh 28 thousand people have taken shelter in relief camps. Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha today monitored the flood situation in Gomti and South Tripura districts by helicopter. 

Revenue Department Secretary Brijesh Pandey informed all these in a press conference at the State Emergency Operations Center on Friday afternoon. 

The press conference was attended by Kiran Gitye, Secretary of Works Department, Abhishek Singh, Secretary of Power Department, JV Doati, Director of Relief, Rehabilitation and Disaster Management Department, Sarat Das, State Project Officer of Disaster Management Department.

Talking about the state's flood situation in the press conference, Revenue Department Secretary Brijesh Pandey said that Chief Minister Professor (Dr) Manik Saha is closely monitoring the state's flood situation. Gomti, South Tripura District, Unkoti District and West Tripura District have suffered heavy losses due to floods. The water levels of rivers in the state are currently flowing below the danger mark. However, Gomti river in Sonamura is still close to danger level. 

He said that about 1 lakh 28 thousand people have taken shelter in 558 relief camps. They are being given necessary relief by the district administration. This includes food, drinking water, medicines etc. It has been possible to establish communication system in various places of Gomti and South Tripura districts. Till date 24 people have been killed, 2 injured and 2 are still missing due to floods.

According to preliminary information, roads, electricity, houses, fisheries, livestock and agriculture have been severely damaged. 

According to preliminary estimates, this year's flood has caused a loss of around 5 thousand crore rupees. It is not yet possible to assess initial damage in many flood affected areas. The revenue secretary said that rescue work is still going on in Gomti and South Tripura districts. 6 teams of NDRF and 6 teams of SDRF are engaged in rescue operations. Helicopters are being used for relief work in many places. 

Today, 11,000 food packets have been distributed among the victims. Foodstuffs will be distributed in those areas tomorrow as well.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department's forecast, there is a possibility of light to moderate rainfall in different parts of the state today and tomorrow. Heavy rainfall is expected in the next few days, according to the forecast. So the administration has requested the people to be careful.

In the press conference, the secretary of the Department of Public Works, Kiran Gitte, said that the cracks that have appeared at Mungiakami on National Highway No. 8 will be repaired quickly. Petrol tankers are coming to Agartala via Ambassa, Kamalpur, Khowai. 

He said that special health camps will be arranged in flood-affected areas. Abhishek Singh, secretary of the power department, said in the press conference that the work of repairing the damaged power infrastructure in the flood-affected areas is going on gradually
