Tripura Govt Signs Historic MoU with AIIMS Delhi to Transform State Healthcare

In a landmark step toward revolutionising Tripura’s healthcare sector, the state government on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, aimed at upgrading medical infrastructure, education, and patient care services to international standards.

According to officials from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), the agreement was signed between AIIMS, Delhi, and Tripura’s Health and Family Welfare Department in the presence of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha at Tripura Bhawan, New Delhi.

Dr. Saha, who also holds the Health and Family Welfare portfolio, described the collaboration as a “matter of immense pride” and a “transformative milestone” for the state.

> “This MoU will facilitate the development of medical colleges and hospitals in Tripura into Centres of Excellence aligned with global benchmarks,” the Chief Minister said.

He added that the government envisions transforming Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital into a full-fledged medical hub equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, modelled on the excellence of AIIMS, Delhi.

AIIMS Director Dr. M. Srinivas and senior officials from both AIIMS and the Tripura Health Department attended the MoU signing ceremony. Notably, a four-member AIIMS team led by Dr. Srinivas had earlier visited AGMC, GBP Hospital, and other health facilities in June to assess healthcare infrastructure and potential areas of improvement.

Dr. Saha, himself a dental surgeon, noted that AIIMS Delhi’s global reputation for medical research and advanced healthcare would significantly strengthen Tripura’s capacity in both medical education and patient services.

“The collaboration marks a crucial step toward ensuring better healthcare access and quality for every citizen of the state,” he said.

On Tuesday, the Chief Minister also met Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda in New Delhi, discussing expansion of healthcare infrastructure and manpower in Tripura. He briefed the Union Minister about the state’s plan to establish a new medical college at Kulai in Dhalai district—an aspirational district—on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) basis.

Discussions also included the setting up of a Tertiary Ophthalmology Hospital in Agartala and an Immunology Lab for Organ Transplant Services at AGMC and GBP Hospital. Dr. Saha requested central support for procuring advanced medical equipment for the Super Speciality Block at AGMC.

Officials said the state government remains committed to delivering world-class healthcare and ensuring that people across all districts benefit from improved medical facilities.
