Tripura Hands Over Bodies of Three Lynched Bangladeshi Smugglers

In a grim aftermath of the mob lynching incident along the Indo-Bangladesh border, Tripura Police on Wednesday handed over the bodies of three Bangladeshi nationals to their country’s authorities through the Paharmura border in Khowai district.

The three men — identified as Jewel Mia, Pandit Mia, and Sajal Mia — were beaten to death by villagers in the Vidyabill area under Champahaor police station on October 15 after being caught allegedly attempting to steal cattle. According to police, the accused trio reportedly attacked local residents with sharp weapons, leaving two villagers critically injured. Enraged by the assault, locals retaliated, resulting in the trio’s deaths on the spot.

Following the recovery of the bodies, Tripura Police registered a case at Champahaor Police Station and launched an investigation, which later confirmed the deceased were Bangladeshi nationals. After post-mortem formalities, the bodies were formally handed over to Bangladesh Police and the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB).

On the Indian side, the handover was attended by Assistant Commandant of the 104th BSF Battalion Kundan Kumar, Khowai Police Station OC Krishna Dhan Sarkar, Champahaor OC Dilip Kumar Debbarma, and Additional Superintendent of Police (Khowai). Representing Bangladesh were Commandant of the 55th BGB Battalion Abul Khair and Chunarughat Police Station OC Zahidul Islam.

Authorities on both sides of the international border have since stepped up vigilance and coordinated patrolling to prevent any escalation of tension in the sensitive region.

“The situation is under control. Security along the border has been tightened to ensure such unfortunate incidents do not recur,” a senior police officer said.

The lynching incident has once again highlighted the persistent issue of cross-border cattle smuggling and rising mob violence in India’s northeastern frontier, drawing concern from both nations over maintaining peace and order along the border.
