The Tripura government on Friday formally operationalised the Prime Minister’s Road Accident Treatment Scheme (PM-RAHT), a flagship initiative aimed at ensuring prompt and cashless medical intervention for road accident victims, Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury announced.
Addressing a press conference at the state secretariat, Chowdhury stated that the scheme will be implemented under the aegis of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Under PM-RAHT, victims of road accidents will be entitled to cashless treatment for a period of up to seven days, with financial coverage capped at ₹1.5 lakh per patient. Expenditure exceeding this threshold will be borne by the patient’s family.
He underscored that the overarching objective of the scheme is to eliminate financial impediments that often delay or deny critical medical care to accident victims. The Transport, Home, and Health & Family Welfare departments will collaboratively oversee and coordinate the scheme’s implementation across the state.
The minister further informed that a virtual review meeting on the rollout of the scheme was convened earlier this week under the stewardship of Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari.
A total of 141 hospitals — including seven private institutions — have been empanelled both within Tripura and outside the state to deliver treatment under the scheme. Hospitals have been categorically instructed not to defer admission or the initiation of medical procedures for road accident victims on administrative grounds.
Chowdhury also referenced the existing ‘Rah-Veer’ initiative, which provides financial assistance of ₹25,000 to individuals who transport accident victims to hospitals within the critical “golden hour.” Thus far, nine individuals from Tripura and one Deputy Superintendent of Police at the national level have been recognised under the programme.
Expressing optimism, the minister stated that PM-RAHT is poised to substantially reduce road accident fatalities and mitigate the financial distress faced by affected families. Senior officials, including Transport Secretary U.K. Chakma and other departmental representatives, were present at the briefing.
