Tripura: NFR Seeks More Time To Restore Freight Train Services

The loss of freight train services due to a derailment in Assam’s Dima Hasao district has become a matter of concern for the Tripura government, while the North East Frontier Railway has sought “a few more days” for recovery.

Goods train services to Tripura have been disrupted since April 26 due to the derailment of a goods train in Jatinga area of Assam, causing a shortage of goods in the northeastern state.

To overcome the situation, the Tripura government has already imposed restrictions on fuel sales as supplies remain low.

”Freight train services have not been restored despite all efforts by the NFR. We will address the issue at the highest level,” Tripura Transport Secretary UK Chakma told PTI.

However, the NFR, which had earlier assured restoration of services on May 7, failed to meet the deadline and demanded three more days.

NFR CPRO Sabyasachi Dey said, “Over the past few days, more than 300 workers have been engaged in restoration work in Jatinga. There has been no disruption to passenger train services, but good train services have been affected by the derailment of a freight train on April 26. We have sought time to restore the service at the earliest.” With the supply of foodgrains hit due to the disruption in freight train services, Tripura’s Additional Secretary for Food and Civil Supplies, Nirmal Adhikari, held a meeting with the representatives of Tripura Merchants’ Association (TMA) and Tripura Wholesale Grocery Merchants’ Association (TWGMA) to assess the situation.

”There is no need to panic as the state has food stocks for about a month. The meeting was to assess the situation in the wake of the disruption of freight train services to the state. We have requested traders to continue purchasing essential commodities, including food grains, by road until train services are restored,” an official said.
