Tripura: People of Six Villages Blocked NH 8 Demanding Road Renovation

People of the six villages blocked the national highway demanding the renovation of the Assam Agartala NH 8 at Kherengjury under North Tripura District.

The blockaders said that the 13 km road of Assam Agartala National Highway No. 8 from Churaibari Seal Tex area to Nowagang area is in poor condition. Drivers of small and big vehicles are in trouble for potholes on the national highway. The local people are also suffering.

It is further alleged that there has been no renovation of the national highway for the past one and a half to two years. But the daily movement of hundreds of lorries has changed the face of the national highway. Vehicles fall into potholes on the national highway. Local people goes markt, students go to school. Moreover, a few days ago, a pregnant woman on her way to Shanichhara Hospital died before reaching the hospital because of bad road.

The national highway was blocked several times for the renovation. But the North district administration filled the gap with bricks to solve the problem. With that, the dilapidated national highway is returning to its old condition after being crushed by the wheels of  big lorries.

Finally, the people of Kherengjuri, Balichra, Chandpur, Lakshi Nagar, North Phulbari, Dakshin Phulbari, Churaibari etc. blocked the national highway in Kherengjuri area from 11 am on Saturday ahead of Panchayat Election.

The road blockers claim that the national highway blockade will be withdrawn if the road is filled with stones and made suitable for traffic. Otherwise the roadblock will continue.

The traffic stopped due to the blockade. Meanwhile, the high-ranking officials of the local administration rushed to the spot. They talked to the blockeders. Later after assurance of the officials the people withdrew the movement.
