Tripura: Power Tariff Hike Proposal Sparks Protest

The Tripura State Electricity Corporation has formally approached the Tripura Electricity Regulatory Commission with a proposal to revise electricity tariffs upward from April 1, triggering sharp opposition from consumer rights groups.

In protest against the proposed hike, the All India Electricity Consumers Association organized a demonstration in front of the corporation’s office on Tuesday.

Sanjay Chowdhury, convener of the organization, stated that a similar proposal for tariff escalation had been submitted by the corporation in November 2025. During the public hearing convened at that time, the Tripura Electricity Consumers Association had forcefully challenged the proposal.

He noted that the association has now resolved to once again present a comprehensive and reasoned petition before the Regulatory Commission, outlining its objections to the latest tariff revision plan.

On Tuesday, electricity consumers assembled in front of the Electricity Corporation premises to register their protest. Following the demonstration, a delegation submitted a detailed memorandum to the Chairman of the Regulatory Commission, urging the authority to categorically reject any move to increase electricity tariffs in Tripura.

Simultaneously, the Electricity Act Amendment Bill–2025 is scheduled to be introduced in the Lok Sabha the same day. Several consumer organizations have alleged that the proposed legislation could pave the way for sweeping privatization of the power sector. In response, the All India Electricity Consumers Association has called for a nationwide protest campaign against the bill.

As part of this nationwide mobilisation, the Tripura Electricity Consumers Association staged the demonstration on Tuesday in front of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation. Addressing the gathering, convener Sanjay Chowdhury strongly condemned the proposed privatization of the power sector, the rollout of smart meters, and the planned electricity tariff hike. He urged electricity consumers across the state to close ranks and forge a united movement to safeguard public interests and resist policies that could burden ordinary citizens.
