Tripura Ready For All polls, Says CM

A day after the Supreme Court refused to grant the Tripura Government more time to respond to a petition filed by TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma over the delay in conducting village committee elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday asserted that the state was “ready for any election.”

Speaking at the Agartala Press Club, Saha said, “We never said that we don’t want to conduct village committee polls… But it is being projected as if we are not interested. We have already placed the issue before the authorities concerned. We are ready for all kinds of polls, be it village committee or TTAADC elections.”

The Supreme Court on Monday turned down the state’s plea for more time, despite government counsel Shuvodeep Roy requesting a two-week adjournment to file a reply affidavit. In a letter to the apex court registrar, Roy said he had entered appearance for the state on October 31 and needed additional time to receive complete instructions from the authorities.

The delay in holding the TTAADC village committee elections has become a major political flashpoint in Tripura, with the TIPRA Motha accusing the government of deliberately postponing grassroots democratic processes in tribal areas.
