Tripura Student’s Murder In Uttarakhand Sparks Inter-State Concern

The Uttarakhand government has taken an uncompromising stand in the murder case of Angel Chakma, a student from Tripura who succumbed to injuries after a brutal assault in Dehradun, with Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami declaring that such crimes are “completely unacceptable” and will be dealt with sternly.

In an official statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) on Sunday, it was confirmed that five accused have been arrested so far in connection with the case. Two of the arrested individuals are minors and have been placed in a juvenile reform home. Law-enforcement agencies are continuing an intensive manhunt to apprehend one absconding accused, for whom a cash reward of ₹25,000 has been announced. A special police team has also been dispatched to Nepal to assist in tracking down the fugitive.

Chief Minister Dhami has directed the police to ensure the swift arrest of the remaining accused, warning that elements attempting to disrupt law and order should not expect any leniency from the state. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding the lives of all residents and students in Uttarakhand and expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family.

The incident has also drawn attention at the inter-state level. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Saturday said he had spoken with his Uttarakhand counterpart regarding the tragic death of Angel Chakma, a resident of Nandanagar in Tripura’s Unakoti district. In a post on social media platform X, CM Saha stated that the student was assaulted by a group of miscreants in Dehradun on December 9 and later died while undergoing treatment at Graphic Era Hospital.

CM Saha said he was assured that a thorough investigation is underway and that justice will be ensured in the case, underscoring the seriousness with which the matter is being pursued by the Uttarakhand government.
