Tripura: Tensions Rise as CPIM Questions Voter Revision Move

Expressing concern over the Election Commission’s special intensive revision (SIR) of voter lists, the CPM on Thursday sought the immediate suspension of the exercise at the subdivision level in Tripura and called for an all-party meeting to discuss the issue.

A delegation of senior state secretariat members — Manik Dey, Naresh Jamatia, Sudhan Das, and Ratan Das — met Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Brijesh Pandey in Agartala and submitted a memorandum.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Manik Dey said the CEO had clarified that only “preparatory work” for the SIR had begun and that no final decision had been taken. However, CPM leaders argued that memorandums issued by electoral registration officers (EROs) indicated that scrutiny of voter rolls was already underway, with booth-level officers (BLOs) asked to furnish details of voters’ family lineage.

In their letter, CPM leaders criticized the commission for not informing political parties or the public about what they termed a “sensitive exercise” that could impact the state’s electoral rolls.

The demand for an SIR had earlier been raised by TIPRA Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, who alleged that illegal Aadhaar cards had been obtained in the region due to corruption.

Alongside electoral concerns, the CPM memorandum also flagged multiple incidents of violence against its leaders and offices in recent weeks. The party accused the ruling BJP and its ally TIPRA Motha of orchestrating attacks.

According to the CPM:

On September 16, three party leaders were injured after BJP-backed miscreants attacked them at the ERO’s office in Santirbazar, South Tripura.

On September 19, a CPM office in Pratapgarh, Agartala, was demolished with a bulldozer.

On September 22, Jampuijala local committee secretary Shyamal Debbarma was allegedly assaulted at his home by TIPRA Motha supporters.

“You, being the highest authority of the state to ensure and supervise the democratic rights of all the parties, should not remain indifferent to these blatant assaults,” the CPM told the CEO in its memorandum, urging him to intervene.
