Tripura to Introduce Advanced Power Technology at Rukhia Plant

In a major move to strengthen Tripura’s power generation capacity, the state government has announced the introduction of Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) technology at the Rukhia Power Plant, aiming to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply despite the ongoing gas crisis.

Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath said that the bhumi pujan for the project will be held on November 26, marking the start of a significant technological upgrade in the state’s power sector. The new system will enable the generation of 120 MW of power using the same amount of gas, making it both efficient and environmentally friendly.

The Minister recalled that the Rukhia plant, originally installed with a 63 MW capacity, had been generating only 40 MW between 2017 and 2019. “In 2019–20, despite the gas shortage, we managed 56 MW, but due to environmental clearance issues, the plant had to be shut down in 2022–23,” he said. Nath added that the current government resolved the clearance issues, and the plant has since resumed operations, producing 19 MW.

The upcoming upgrade project, estimated to cost ₹1,119 crore (excluding GST), will boost the plant’s efficiency and capacity. Nath also highlighted that the state is diversifying into solar power to reduce dependence on depleting gas reserves and to ensure long-term sustainability.

He reaffirmed that the government’s goal is to make Tripura self-reliant in power generation, reducing dependence on imported electricity and promoting reliable, affordable, and eco-friendly energy.
