C. P. Radhakrishnan on Sunday said the Northeast has witnessed a remarkable transformation in connectivity over the past decade, significantly accelerating economic activity and regional integration.
Addressing the convocation ceremony of Tripura University at Suryamaninagar in West Tripura, the Vice-President said sustained efforts by Narendra Modi have unlocked the vast potential of the region.
Recalling his earlier travel experiences, Radhakrishnan noted that reaching Agartala from Chennai once required considerable time and logistical difficulty. However, improved transport infrastructure and enhanced rail connectivity have drastically reduced travel time.
“Earlier it was difficult to travel from Chennai to Agartala in a single day. Today, with improved infrastructure and multiple long-distance trains connecting the region, one can even travel from Kohima to Agartala within the same day. This reflects the emergence of a more connected India,” he said.
The Vice-President added that the Northeast’s economy is now gaining greater momentum as improved connectivity has facilitated faster movement of people, goods and opportunities.
Speaking on the role of higher education institutions, he urged Tripura University to continue strengthening its academic and research ecosystem. He said the university has evolved into a vibrant hub of teaching, research and innovation and must further expand its contributions to high-quality research and intellectual property generation.
“Participation in the national research platform signals a university’s arrival on the national academic landscape,” he remarked, encouraging scholars to pursue innovation-driven research.
Radhakrishnan also emphasised the importance of discipline and time management in personal and professional life. Acknowledging that setbacks are often part of the journey to success, he advised students to remain resilient and focused.
Highlighting the transformative power of technology, he urged young people to adopt it responsibly, stating that “progress with purpose” must guide technological advancement for the betterment of society.
Quoting the celebrated Tamil poet Subramania Bharati, the Vice-President said every citizen of India is a guardian of the nation and that collective commitment and unity will propel the country towards greater achievements.
Radhakrishnan also spoke about the growing tourism potential of Tripura. Referring to the development of the Matabari tourist circuit, whose foundation stone was laid earlier this year at Udaipur in Gomati district, he said the project would significantly boost tourism and generate employment.
He noted that the annual tourist footfall at the revered Tripura Sundari Temple has increased from 3.5 lakh to 8.5 lakh, underscoring the state’s expanding tourism appeal.
Welcoming the launch of the State Innovation Mission under the Atal Innovation Mission, he thanked Manik Saha and his administration for promoting innovation and entrepreneurship as part of a long-term development strategy.
Later, during an interaction with “Lakhpati Didis” at the Badharghat International Fair Ground on the occasion of International Women's Day, the Vice-President expressed confidence that many of them would soon emerge as “Crorepati Didis,” reflecting the growing economic empowerment of women in the state.
Before concluding his visit, Radhakrishnan paid homage to fallen soldiers at the Albert Ekka War Memorial, honouring the bravery and sacrifice of the nation’s martyrs.
