Agartala turned into a hotspot of political tension on Wednesday as a high-level All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) delegation, led by spokesperson Kunal Ghosh, arrived in the city following alleged attacks on the party’s state headquarters by BJP supporters.

The delegation, including Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev, youth leader Sudip Raha, MP Sayoni Ghosh, and Pratima Mondal, was sent to assess the situation and meet the state police chief. Heavy security was deployed at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport and the party office.
The leaders faced obstacles with local transport, prompting a sit-in near the airport departure block. “The transport agency that had agreed to provide cars was threatened and forced to cancel the booking. Even the pre-paid taxi counter refused service. We are ready to pay, we are not seeking favors,” Ghosh said.

Sushmita Dev remarked that such hostility is a recurring challenge for AITC in Tripura, citing previous attacks on party convoys. Addressing the media later, Ghosh condemned BJP’s politicization of relief work in West Bengal and criticized remarks undermining welfare schemes like PM Awas Yojana and MGNREGA.
Despite tensions, Sayoni Ghosh noted that locals had welcomed the delegation, signaling that AITC’s presence is growing in the state. The team later met the Director General of Police, submitting a memorandum demanding immediate arrests and safety assurances for party leaders and workers.
AITC leadership stated that the attack on its office reflected the ruling party’s nervousness ahead of the upcoming political season, highlighting the intensifying contest in Tripura.
