The installation of a natural gas pipeline linking Tripura and Mizoram is progressing steadily, with nearly 45 per cent of the project completed so far, officials said on Thursday. The strategically significant project is being executed by Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGCL) under the North East Natural Gas Pipeline Grid initiative.
Spanning 119.5 kilometres, the pipeline is scheduled for completion by December 2027. It will originate from the Panisagar receiving terminal in Tripura and traverse key locations in Mizoram, including Kanhmun, Zawlnuam, Kawrthah, Tuidam and Darlak, before reaching near Mamit. From there, the pipeline will extend towards Lengte and terminate at the proposed Sihhmui receiving terminal, located approximately 21 kilometres from Aizawl.
Officials said that from the Sihhmui terminal, household piped natural gas (PNG) connections within Aizawl city will be supplied by Tripura Natural Gas Corporation Limited (TNGCL), marking a significant expansion of clean energy access in the state.
Mizoram’s Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, B. Lalchhanzova, visited Tripura’s capital Agartala on Wednesday to review the progress of the project. During his visit, the minister held discussions with officials of TNGCL and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), inspected a compressed natural gas (CNG) station, and toured a residential complex where around 330 households have already been provided with piped gas connections.
Addressing TNGCL officials, Lalchhanzova described the pipeline project as a potential milestone for Mizoram, noting that it would ensure a steady and affordable supply of natural gas for residents. He said the project would not only cater to domestic consumption but also support commercial, industrial, transport and other sectors.
The minister expressed optimism that the initiative would generate employment opportunities and pave the way for the establishment of major industries in the state. He urged IGCL and TNGCL to execute the project with diligence and precision, while ensuring timely completion within the stipulated schedule.
