Trump May Visit India For Quad Summit, Says Envoy-Designate Sergio Gor

In a major diplomatic signal, Sergio Gor, President Donald Trump’s nominee for US ambassador to India, has confirmed that talks are underway for Trump’s possible visit to New Delhi later this year to attend the Quad Leaders Summit.

Gor said the president remains committed to “sustained engagement” with the Quad, underscoring Washington’s intent to bolster cooperation with India, Japan, and Australia despite trade frictions with New Delhi. “There have already been talks about a trip for the next Quad meeting,” he revealed.

The upcoming summit will be hosted by India, though the final dates are yet to be fixed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had extended the invitation to Trump during his US visit in February. The last Quad summit was hosted in September 2024 by then-president Joe Biden, after India ceded hosting duties owing to Biden’s inability to travel overseas during the election year.

Highlighting the importance of continuity, Gor noted that Trump had earlier this year travelled to Japan, another key Quad partner. “They have also emphasised the important relationship that we must build on,” he said.

On US-India ties, Gor dismissed recent tariff disputes as minor, stressing that the broader relationship was anchored in decades of trust. “Despite a little hiccup on tariffs, our relationship with India is much stronger; it’s built on many more decades,” he said.

He also pointed to the recent joint troop exercises in Alaska involving 500 soldiers from both countries as evidence of expanding defence cooperation. Significantly, Gor suggested Washington sees India as a natural counterweight to China. “India’s relationship with the US is much warmer than the relationship between New Delhi and Beijing,” he asserted.

If Trump’s visit materialises, it will mark his first India trip since returning to the White House and could shape the strategic contours of Indo-Pacific security for years to come.
