The team of Donald Trump is reportedly exploring the possibility of negotiating a ceasefire with Iran, according to Axios. Key advisers, including Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, are said to be actively involved in the initiative.
Tehran, however, has laid down stringent preconditions for any dialogue. These include an immediate cessation of hostilities, financial compensation for damages incurred, and firm assurances against any future military aggression.
Washington has signaled reluctance to fully concede to these demands, particularly rejecting the compensation clause at this stage. While direct negotiations between the United States and Iran have yet to commence, intermediary nations such as Egypt, Qatar, and the United Kingdom are reportedly facilitating backchannel diplomacy.
The United States is pressing Iran to suspend its missile development programme, halt uranium enrichment, dismantle its nuclear infrastructure, and cease support for groups like Hezbollah and Hamas.
Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian held a telephonic conversation with Narendra Modi, urging the BRICS bloc to play a proactive role in deterring aggression against Iran. He emphasized the need for BRICS to act independently, free from external pressure.
Pezeshkian further proposed the establishment of a regional security framework led by Middle Eastern nations, aimed at ensuring long-term stability while minimizing external intervention.
