In a dramatic escalation of rhetoric, former U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday declared he is prepared to impose sweeping sanctions on Russia — but only if all NATO allies commit to halting Russian oil imports and implementing parallel measures.
Posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump described the continued purchase of Russian energy by some NATO nations as “shocking” and a betrayal of the alliance’s bargaining power.
> “I am ready to do major Sanctions on Russia when all NATO Nations have agreed, and started, to do the same thing, and when all NATO Nations STOP BUYING OIL FROM RUSSIA,” he wrote.
Trump added that NATO should go further, imposing tariffs of 50 to 100 percent on China, to remain in place until the Ukraine war ends. According to him, such steps would not only weaken Beijing’s influence over Moscow but also force a swift conclusion to the conflict.
“This war would never have started if I was President — it is Biden’s and Zelenskyy’s war. I am only here to help stop it, and save thousands of Russian and Ukrainian lives… If NATO does as I say, the war will end quickly,” Trump insisted.
His comments came just a day after the Kremlin announced that peace talks with Ukraine were “on hold.” Trump, meanwhile, told Fox News that his patience with Russian President Vladimir Putin was “running out fast,” though he stressed that both Moscow and Kyiv had failed to engage consistently in negotiations.
The proposal — conditioning U.S. sanctions on NATO unanimity and linking them to tariffs on China — is likely to ignite intense debate among allies. Energy policy within NATO remains divided, with some European members still reliant on Russian oil and gas, while others have already moved to diversify supplies.
Analysts warn that Trump’s formula would be difficult to implement in practice, but the remarks underscore his continued attempt to position himself as a decisive broker in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
