TUNF Militant Arrested in Mizoram by Tripura Police

In a continued crackdown on banned militant outfits, the North Tripura district police have arrested another active member of the outlawed Tripura United National Front (TUNF), marking a significant success within days of a previous arrest.

According to police sources, the arrest was carried out on Wednesday from the neighbouring state of Mizoram following a specific intelligence input. A police team led by the Officer-in-Charge of Vanghmun Police Station in the Jampui Hills, Rinpuia Darlong, conducted a targeted operation that resulted in the apprehension of Lalthanga Riang, an active TUNF militant.

The arrested militant is the son of Harimohan Riang and a resident of the Bhandarima area under Anandabazar Police Station in the Kanchanpur subdivision of North Tripura district. Police confirmed that he was actively associated with the banned organisation and involved in militant activities.

A case has been registered against him under Sections 61(2)(a), 148 and 310(4) of the Indian Penal Code, along with Sections 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act, 1908, in connection with Vanghmun Police Station Case No. 2025VGM007.

For security reasons, the arrested militant was shifted from Vanghmun Police Station to Kanchanpur Police Station on Wednesday night. He was subsequently produced before the Kanchanpur Sub-Divisional Court on Thursday.

This arrest comes close on the heels of another TUNF militant being apprehended from the Damchhara–Dumdum area under Panisagar subdivision last week, indicating intensified efforts by the district police to curb militant activities in the region.

The development has created a stir in the locality, with residents expressing satisfaction over the proactive police action. Kanchanpur Sub-Divisional Police Officer Ashish Kumar Thakur briefed the media on the operation, reiterating the police administration’s firm commitment to maintaining peace, law, and order in North Tripura district.
