The Meghalaya government has temporarily suspended trading activities in border haats along the international border with Bangladesh due to the disturbed situation in the country.
Giving information about this on Thursday, officials said that the BSF and Meghalaya Police have shared intelligence that if the border haats are reopened, there is a strong possibility of Bangladeshi citizens, members of illegal militant organizations and smugglers crossing the border and other unauthorized activities on the border.
Let us tell you that at present there are two haats on the border, one in Balat in East Khasi Hills district and the other in Kalachar in South West Garo Hills district.
Let us tell you that apart from these two, many other haats are operational, but are not fully active yet. A senior government official said, 'The government has decided to temporarily suspend trading activities in border haats until the situation in Bangladesh stabilizes.' This decision has been taken on the basis of intelligence received from BSF and Meghalaya Police.
Earlier on Monday, the state government had imposed curfew from 6 pm to 6 am daily on the international border with Bangladesh till further orders. The official said that the state government will hold a meeting with various parties including BSF and state police to discuss the situation and deal with the possible threats of anti-national elements taking advantage of the situation.
There are about 22 proposed border haats on the 443 km long international border of Meghalaya. In such a situation, there is a lot of possibility of infiltration from Bangladesh through these areas.
Let us tell you that in the last few days, Bangladesh, one of India's most important neighbors, is going through many problems. Even after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left power and came to India from the country, the incidents of violence there are not stopping.
On one hand, minority Hindus are being targeted, while on the other hand, Awami League supporters and leaders are also being attacked
