In a significant development concerning local self-governance in Tripura, the Supreme Court has directed that the long-pending Village Committee (VC) elections be conducted simultaneously with the upcoming Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections.
The directive has reportedly drawn sharp criticism from the state government. The information was shared by former Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarman through a social media post on Tuesday.
According to Debbarman, the Supreme Court has clearly instructed the State Election Commission to ensure that the Village Committee elections are held alongside the ADC polls. If implemented as directed, this will mark the first VC elections in nearly a decade.
He stated that the apex court’s order will strengthen grassroots democracy in the TTAADC areas and bring an end to the prolonged delay in conducting elections at the village committee level.
The conduct of VC elections has been pending for almost 10 years, raising concerns among various political and civil society groups about democratic representation at the grassroots level within the ADC areas.
The Supreme Court’s intervention is now expected to expedite the electoral process and restore elected bodies at the village level.
Political observers believe the simultaneous conduct of ADC and VC polls may significantly impact the political landscape in tribal areas, as both elections will shape governance structures at different tiers of the autonomous district administration.
Further details from the State Election Commission are awaited regarding the schedule and modalities of the combined elections.
