Violence broke out at a rally of the youth-led National Citizen Party (NCP) in Gopalganj town of Bangladesh on Wednesday. Four people were killed in police firing during the violence. 9 people were injured by shelling. Gopalganj is the hometown of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
According to Bangladesh's Prothom Alo news agency, supporters of Sheikh Hasina's party Awami League clashed with the police during the NCP rally. According to eyewitnesses, Awami League supporters attacked the police, army and paramilitary forces with sticks, bricks and stones.
The protesters also vandalised vehicles of the police and the local administrative head. They also attacked the convoy of NCP, after which the security forces had to open fire. The security forces also fired tear gas shells and sound grenades to disperse the crowd.
Three of those killed in the violence have been identified as Dipto Saha (25 years), Ramzan Qazi (18 years) and Sohail Mollah (41 years). Doctors said the deceased were brought to Gopalganj General Hospital in an injured condition.
Despite the violence, the NCP completed its rally in Gopalganj. Leaders delivered speeches on a damaged stage with a broken sound system. NCP founder and convener Nahid Islam presided over the rally. He said that if the security agencies do not give us justice, we will seek justice for ourselves.
NCP leader Sarjis Alam said in a Facebook post, "In Gopalganj, we were attacked by the henchmen of killer Hasina. The police just stood and watched the spectacle and retreated."
The office of Bangladesh Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has ordered a 22-hour curfew in Gopalganj from 8 pm on Wednesday. Around 200 soldiers of the paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh (BGP) have been deployed in Gopalganj.
NCP is a new emerging political party in Bangladesh. It was formed on 28 February 2025. It is considered to be the first student-led political party. It has the support of interim government head Muhammad Yunus.
Yunus said in a post on Twitter that "preventing the youth from holding a peaceful rally to celebrate the one-year anniversary of their revolutionary movement is a shameful violation of their fundamental rights." Yunus blamed Hasina's Awami League party and its student wing for the violence.
Yunus said, "The perpetrators must be identified as soon as possible and held fully accountable. There is no place for such violence against any citizen of Bangladesh. We applaud the courage of the students who continued with their rally despite these malicious threats."
Bangladesh witnessed massive student-led protests last year. On August 5, 2024, a mob attacked the residence of the then Prime Minister, 77-year-old Sheikh Hasina. Hasina fled Bangladesh to India before the mob arrived. She has been living in India since then.
With this, the 20-year-old government of Awami League in Bangladesh also fell. After this, an interim government was formed under the leadership of Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus. Students across the country were protesting against Hasina over the quota system.
Actually, on June 5, 2024, the High Court in Bangladesh implemented a 30% quota system in jobs. This reservation was being given to the families of freedom fighters. But the Hasina government later abolished this reservation. After this, the students started protesting demanding her resignation.
On April 8, 2024, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, 'Allah has kept me alive for a purpose. I will return. The day will definitely come when those who target Awami League leaders will be brought to justice.'
Awami League President Hasina said this when she was talking to the families of her party leaders on social media. They have been taking refuge in India since leaving Bangladesh in August last year.
Hasina said about the interim advisor of the Bangladesh government, Mohammad Yunus, that he is a person who never loved people. Yunus gave small loans to the poor at high interest rates and lived a luxurious life in many countries with this money
