The Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in India has suspended all visa and consular services with effect from December 23, citing “unavoidable circumstances,” according to an official notification issued on December 22.
The notice, signed by SM Almas Hossain, First Secretary and Head of Mission, stated that all categories of visa issuance and consular operations at the Assistant High Commission in Agartala will remain closed until further instructions are communicated.
The move comes amid heightened security sensitivities following protests outside the mission by members of the Tipra Indigenous Students Federation (TISF), the youth wing of the Tipra Motha Party, along with several right-wing organisations. The demonstrators protested alleged attacks on members of the Hindu community in Bangladesh and objected to recent remarks made by leaders of the National Citizen Party.
During the protest, participants raised slogans and demanded decisive action from Bangladeshi authorities to ensure the protection of religious minorities and uphold their constitutional rights. In response, security around the Assistant High Commission was significantly tightened as a precautionary measure to maintain public order and prevent any escalation.
Officials have not specified a timeline for the resumption of visa and consular services. Applicants and members of the public have been advised to monitor official communications from the mission for further updates.
