Voice of Venezuela: Machado Wins 2025 Nobel Peace Prize

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her two-decade struggle to promote democratic rights and push for a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy in Venezuela.

Announcing the award, the Norwegian Nobel Committee said that in an era when dictatorship is rising and democracy weakening in many regions, the courage of people like Machado offers renewed hope.

“The committee believes democracy is the only prerequisite for lasting peace. When governments suppress citizens through violence and fear, it becomes essential to honor such brave individuals,” the statement read.

Machado, founder of the civic organization Súmate, has long campaigned for free and fair elections in Venezuela and faced repeated intimidation from the regime for her activism.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump, who had publicly expressed hopes of winning the Nobel Peace Prize this year, was not selected by the committee.
