Voter List Revision Will Continue In Bihar. Aadhaar, Voter ID, Ration Card Is Identity Card: SC

The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed the revision of voter list to continue before the Bihar assembly elections. The court called it a constitutional responsibility.

In the Supreme Court, a bench of Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Joymalya Bagchi raised questions on the timing of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) i.e. voter list revision.

The court told the Election Commission that during SIR in Bihar, Aadhaar, Voter ID, Ration Card should also be considered as identity cards.

According to the bench, none of the petitioners, including the leaders of 10 opposition parties, has demanded an interim stay on the process of the Election Commission.

The Supreme Court sought a reply from the Election Commission on the petitions by July 21. The next hearing was fixed for July 28.

The court heard the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) i.e. voter list revision for about 3 hours. The petitioners allege that the voter list revision is being done bypassing the rules. The citizenship of the voter is being checked. This is against the law.

11 people including RJD MP Manoj Jha, TMC MP Mahua Moitra have filed petitions against SIR.

Advocates Gopal Shankar Narayan, Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi argued on behalf of the petitioner.

The Election Commission was represented by former Attorney General KK Venugopal, Rakesh Dwivedi and Maninder Singh.
