Women Judge Are Very Less. Not Even One In 4 High Courts Including Tripura: SC Bar Association

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has raised concern over the low representation of women judges in the Supreme Court and high courts across the country.

"The SCBA expresses grave concern over the disproportionately low representation of women judges in the Supreme Court and high courts across the country," said the resolution passed by the bar body on Saturday.

The resolution said that the Bar Association requests the Chief Justice of India and the Collegium to give immediate and appropriate consideration to the promotion of more women judges in the upcoming round of judicial appointments to the Supreme Court and High Courts.

Currently, there is only one woman judge serving in the Supreme Court, Justice B.V. Nagarathna. Justice Nagarathna recently expressed her dissent over the collegium's decision to appoint Chief Justice of Patna High Court Vipul M. Pancholi as a Supreme Court judge. Justice Pancholi will be the Chief Justice of India from October 3, 2031 to May 27, 2033.

The Bar Association said it is on record that several high courts, including those of Uttarakhand, Tripura, Meghalaya and Manipur, currently have no women judges.

There are about 1,100 sanctioned posts of judges in high courts across the country, out of which about 670 are occupied by men and only 103 by women, while the remaining posts are vacant.

The bar body said that SCBA President Vikas Singh in his letters dated May 24, 2025 and July 18, 2025 addressed to the Chief Justice of India had urged that the posts in the higher judiciary, including the Supreme Court and the High Courts, be filled by women on a proportionate basis.

The SCBA said it strongly believes that greater gender balance on the Bench is essential not only to ensure fair and equitable representation but also to strengthen public confidence in the judiciary, enrich judicial outlook and reflect the diversity of our society in the highest institution of justice.

The SCBA also expressed deep disappointment that in the recent appointments to the Supreme Court, no woman judge was promoted from the bar or the bench, while no woman judge has been appointed to the Supreme Court since 2021.

In 2021, three women judges, Justice Hima Kohli, Justice Bela M Trivedi and Justice Nagarathna were appointed to the Supreme Court. Justice Kohli and Justice Trivedi have retired.
