Women MPs’ Protest Forces Adjournment in Lok Sabha

The Lok Sabha witnessed repeated disruptions on Wednesday, forcing the House to be adjourned four times amid sustained protests by opposition MPs. The uproar ultimately delayed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled response to the Motion of Thanks, which was to be delivered at 5 p.m.
When proceedings resumed in the evening, women opposition MPs surrounded the seats of ruling party leaders, including that of the Prime Minister, holding placards reading “Do what is right.” The protest was aimed at opposing the suspension of eight opposition MPs following a ruckus in the House on Tuesday. Due to the continued disorder, Speaker Sandhya Rai adjourned the House till Thursday.
The situation briefly eased after some Union ministers urged the protesting MPs to return to their seats, following which the siege was lifted.
Earlier in the day, a heated exchange reportedly took place between opposition and BJP MPs inside Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s chamber. A video from the meeting showed a woman opposition MP engaged in a tense discussion with Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju.
Meanwhile, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey created controversy by displaying books and notes in the House, claiming they exposed alleged corruption, betrayal and moral lapses of the Gandhi family and the Congress party. The titles he cited included Edwina and Nehru, Reminiscences of the Nehru Age, The Red Sari and The Accidental Prime Minister. During the chaos, opposition MPs again flung papers towards the Chair.
Amid the disruptions, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal presented a statement on the India–United States tariff agreement, describing it as “historic” and asserting that India’s agriculture and food sectors had been fully safeguarded. He said the deal would significantly aid India’s long-term development.
However, opposition MPs continued shouting slogans such as “Let the LoP speak,” “Narendra Modi, surrender Modi,” and “Narendra Modi is afraid,” forcing the Speaker to adjourn the House till 2 p.m.
