Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is often in the headlines for his statements, once again cornered the opposition on Tuesday, saying that he would take sides and would not let Miya Muslims take over Assam.
Sarma was speaking on adjournment motions brought by opposition parties in the Assembly to discuss the law and order situation in the state in the backdrop of the rape of a 14-year-old girl in Nagaon.
Responding to the proposal, he said that if population growth was taken into account, the crime rate would not have increased. When the opposition accused him of being biased, Himanta Biswa Sarma retorted, "I will take one side. What can you do about it?"
He stressed, "Why would people from Lower Assam go to Upper Assam? So that the Miyan Muslims can take over Assam? We will not let this happen."
Amid a heated debate in the assembly, members of both the ruling and opposition parties trooped into the well of the House, forcing Speaker Biswajit Daimary to adjourn the proceedings for 10 minutes. MLAs from the Congress, AIUDF and CPI(M) and the lone independent MLA Akhil Gogoi had moved four adjournment motions to discuss the situation arising out of rising crimes in the state, including crimes against women.
Let us tell you that the Assam Cabinet recently approved the socio-economic survey of the indigenous Muslim population of the state. In the year 2022, five Muslim classes were identified and recognized as indigenous Assamese Muslims. All of them are Assamese language speaking people. There is another community, which is called Miyan Muslims in Assam and these people are Bengali speaking.
Actually, there has often been controversy about the Muslim population in Assam. At different times, governments have been alleging that due to the border, Muslims from neighboring countries are coming to Assam. The Himanta Biswa government talked about putting a filter so that Indian Muslims can be separated from outsiders
